Quick answer

A 1.3–1.5 kg chicken takes about 50–60 minutes at 180°C in an air fryer large enough to hold it with space around it. Start breast side down for 30 minutes, then turn breast side up to finish. As a rough guide allow around 40 minutes per kilo, but always check: the thickest part of the thigh should reach at least 75°C and juices should run clear. Rest for 10–15 minutes before carving.

Roasting a whole chicken in an air fryer is a good option for smaller households: no big oven to heat, crisp skin all over, and juicy meat. It does need a model with a basket big enough to hold the bird with room for air to circulate.

Here's how to check it fits, how long to cook it and how to make sure it's safe to eat.

Will a whole chicken fit?

Most single-basket air fryers of around 5.5 litres or more can take a small chicken of about 1.2–1.5 kg. Dual-drawer models usually can't fit one in a single drawer, though some larger ones can manage a small bird.

The chicken should sit flat in the basket with a gap of a few centimetres around the sides and between the top of the bird and the heating element. If it touches the element or the sides, it will burn on top and stay undercooked where it's pressed against the basket.

Tip: If the chicken is too tall, spatchcock it: cut out the backbone with kitchen scissors and press it flat. It cooks faster and more evenly.

Timings by weight

All at 180°C. These are estimates — air fryers vary, so start checking early with a thermometer.

  • 1.2 kg chicken: around 45–55 minutes
  • 1.5 kg chicken: around 55–65 minutes
  • Spatchcocked 1.5 kg chicken: around 40–50 minutes
  • Poussin or very small bird (around 500 g): around 25–30 minutes

Preparing the chicken

Don't wash raw chicken — it spreads bacteria. Instead:

  1. Take the chicken out of its packaging and remove any string or giblets.
  2. Pat the skin dry all over with kitchen paper.
  3. Rub with a tablespoon of oil and season with salt, pepper and herbs or spices.
  4. Optionally, put half a lemon and a few garlic cloves in the cavity.
  5. Wash your hands, boards and any surfaces that touched the raw chicken.

Breast down, then breast up

Starting breast side down for the first half protects the leaner breast meat from the heat directly above and lets juices run into it. Turning it breast side up for the second half crisps the skin.

Use tongs and a wooden spoon in the cavity to turn it, or wear clean oven gloves. Be careful of hot juices.

Checking it's cooked

Push a probe thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh, between the leg and the body, without touching the bone. It should read at least 75°C. Check the thickest part of the breast too.

Without a thermometer, pierce the thickest part of the thigh with a skewer: the juices should run clear with no pink or red. The leg should also move loosely in its joint. If in doubt, cook for longer and check again.

Resting and carving

Rest the chicken on a board loosely covered with foil for 10–15 minutes. This keeps the meat juicy and makes carving easier. Use the resting time to cook sides — roast potatoes or vegetables can go into the air fryer while the chicken rests.

Leftover chicken should be cooled, refrigerated within two hours and eaten within two days. Strip the carcass and use it to make stock.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a 1.5 kg chicken take in an air fryer?

Around 55–65 minutes at 180°C, depending on your model. Always check the thigh reaches 75°C.

Can I cook a frozen whole chicken in an air fryer?

No. Defrost a whole chicken fully in the fridge first — this can take a day or more — and cook it as soon as it's defrosted.

Can I make gravy from air fryer chicken?

Yes. Pour the juices from the drawer into a jug, skim off the fat and use them with stock and gravy granules or flour.

Should I put oil on a whole chicken in the air fryer?

A light rub of oil helps the skin brown and crisp evenly. You don't need much.
