Do You Need to Preheat an Air Fryer? When It Really Helps
Preheating for 3–5 minutes helps chips, breaded food and steaks crisp up. See which foods don't need it, how long to preheat and how to do it safely.

Preheating is not always essential, but 3–5 minutes at the cooking temperature helps foods that should be crisp, such as chips, breaded chicken, frozen snacks and steaks. Foods that cook gently or for a long time, such as jacket potatoes, roast vegetables and reheated leftovers, do fine from cold — just add a couple of minutes. Never preheat with an empty liner or loose parchment in the basket.
Some air fryer manuals tell you to preheat; others barely mention it. Some models have a dedicated preheat button that runs for a few minutes and beeps. So does it actually matter?
The short version: preheating makes timings more predictable and gives a better sear or crunch on certain foods. For many everyday meals it makes little difference. Here is how to decide.
What preheating does
When you put food into a cold air fryer, the first few minutes are spent heating the basket, the drawer and the air. During that time the surface of the food warms gradually rather than hitting high heat straight away.
For crisp foods, that slow start lets moisture seep to the surface and steam, which can soften coatings. For a steak or burger, it means less browning. A preheated basket gives an immediate blast of heat that sets coatings and starts browning quickly.
Foods that benefit from preheating

Preheat for these:
- Fresh and frozen chips
- Breaded or battered chicken and fish
- Frozen snacks such as spring rolls, onion rings and nuggets
- Steaks, chops and burgers where you want a browned crust
- Pastry, such as sausage rolls, where you want a crisp base
- Small bakes that rely on an even starting temperature
Foods that don't need it
Long-cooked items and anything where browning happens gradually anyway are fine from cold. The extra couple of minutes at the start are absorbed by the total cooking time.
- Jacket potatoes and whole sweet potatoes
- Roast vegetable mixes
- Whole chicken or larger joints
- Reheating leftovers
- Hard or soft 'boiled' eggs cooked in the basket
Tip: If you skip preheating, add about 2–3 minutes to the cooking time and check by sight rather than the clock.
How long to preheat

Most basket air fryers reach temperature in about 3–5 minutes. Larger models and dual-drawer units may take slightly longer. If your model has a preheat function, it will usually stop and signal when ready.
Without a preheat button, set the temperature you plan to cook at, run it empty with the drawer closed for 3–5 minutes, then add the food and set your cooking time.
Preheating safely
Do not preheat with loose parchment, paper liners or foil in the basket. Without food weighing them down, the fan can lift them into the heating element, where they can scorch or catch fire. Add liners at the same time as the food.
Silicone liners are heavier, but manufacturers' advice varies — check the instructions that came with yours. Always handle a preheated basket with oven gloves; the metal gets very hot.
Does preheating cost much?
It uses a small amount of extra electricity. You can estimate it yourself: multiply the air fryer's power rating in kilowatts by the preheat time in hours, then by your unit rate from your energy bill. A few minutes of preheating adds only a small fraction to the total for a typical meal, but if you are cooking several batches in a row, only the first batch needs it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I preheat my air fryer with the food inside?
You can simply start cooking from cold with food in — that is not really preheating, but it works for many foods. Just add a couple of minutes.
My air fryer has no preheat button. What should I do?
Set the cooking temperature and run it empty for 3–5 minutes with the drawer closed, then add the food.
Is it bad to run an air fryer empty?
Running it empty for a few minutes to preheat is normal and covered by most manuals. Avoid leaving it running empty for long periods.
Do I need to preheat for each batch?
No. Between batches the air fryer stays hot, so you can go straight into the next round.
